Hungarian Words - Days, Dates And Times

Below Tünde and I have spoken many Hungarian words whereby we have purposely slowed down each word, syllable-by-syllable, so that you know how each syllable should be pronounced and how each word should be spoken as a whole; hopefully improving your learning and speaking of Hungarian.

Play each word twice or more, looking at its syllable notes at the same time, as the first attempt to play a word may be hindered by buffering; plus the fact you need to hear a syllable/word more than once anyway.

Days Of The Week

HÉTFŐ (MONDAY) - HATE-FUR

    

KEDD (TUESDAY) - KEHD

    

Put a slight linger on the DD, like a long D or small, infant school, da sound. Pronounce it as KED...tiny pause...Da (KEHD...Da).

SZERDA (WEDNESDAY) - SARE-DOH

    

The sze is pronounced as seh, but with the R (which is a long r, double r, ra sound) it becomes Sairr as in Sarah. So say it as Sairr-Doh.

CSÜTÖRTÖK (THURSDAY) - CHOO-TUR-TURK

    

The chew sound is more like a choo choo train sound, as in shooter or tutor. You can get away with Chew-Ter-Terk though.

PÉNTEK (FRIDAY) - PAIN-TEK

    

SZOMBAT (SATURDAY) - SOHM-BOHT

    

VASÁRNAP (SUNDAY) - VOH-SHARR-NOP

    

Times Of The Week/Month/Year

NAP (DAY) - NOP

HÉT (WEEK) - HATE

HÓNAP (MONTH) - HO-NOP

Long O - Sounds like Dough and Owe, so say: Hough-Nop.

ÉV (YEAR) - AYVE

Pronounce it as in: Behave or Behaviour (Behayve / Behayviour).

TEGNAP (YESTERDAY) - TEG-NOP

MA (TODAY) - MOH

HOLNAP (TOMORROW) - HOLE-NOP

JÖVŐRE (NEXT YEAR) - YUR-VUR-REH

    

HOLNAPUTÁN (DAY AFTER TOMORROW) - HOLE-NOP-OO-TAN

    

TEGNAPELŐTT (DAY BEFORE YESTERDAY) - TEG-NOP-EH-LERT

    

HÉTVÉGE (WEEKEND) - HATE-VAY-GEH

    

On A Certain Day

HÉTFŐN (ON MONDAY) - HATE-FURN

C is that spitting sound!...not in the English alphabet.

ÁPRILIS (APRIL) - APP-REE-LISH (Spoken more like: AH-PRE-LISH)

    

MÁJUS (MAY) - MAH-YUSH

    

JÚNIUS (JUNE) - YOU-KNEE-USH

    

JÚLIUS (JULY) - YOU-LEE-USH

    

AUGUSZTUS (AUGUST) - AU-GUST-USH

    

AU is pronounced as How without the H - OW as in Audi (as in the car)

SZEPTEMBER (SEPTEMBER) - SEP-TEM-BEAR

    

OKTÓBER (OCTOBER) - OCK-TOE-BEAR

    

NOVEMBER (NOVEMBER) - NO-VEM-BEAR

    

DECEMBER (DECEMBER) - DET-SEM-BEAR (C = TS - DET-SEM-BEAR)

    

The Four Seasons Of The Year

TAVASZ (SPRING) - TOH-VOSS

    

NYÁR (SUMMER) - NYARR

    

NYA and ARE together, with double R sound.

ŐSZ (AUTUMN) - URS (Long UR)

    

Sounds like Purse without the P.

TÉL (WINTER) - TAIL

    

TAY-ILL, not TAY-HULL or TAY-UL.

Special Days Of The Year

SZÜLETÉSNAP (BIRTHDAY) - SUE-LEH-TAYSH-NOP

    

BOLDOG SZÜLETÉSNAPOT (HAPPY BIRTHDAY) - BOLE-DOG SUE-LEH-TAYSH-NOH-POT

ÚJ (NEW) is pronounced similar to Hoy (without the H) but more like a O sound.
